4. The Race Over the Mountain

The challenge came in the mail.  Someone who called himself The Enemy challenged one of the boys in the group to a race over the mountain.  This is the story of the race.

“The race started early in the morning; the boy from the group was driving his pinewood derby car, and The Enemy was driving a racecar with a huge engine.  When the race started The Enemy got a fast start and took the lead, but the boy’s pinewood car was quick, and he began to catch up with The Enemy.

The Enemy did not want to be caught, so he dropped some oil on the road and the boy’s pinewood derby car spun around in a circle and went off the road!  The Enemy laughed and headed towards the mountain faster than ever!

The boy got his pinewood car back on the road and took off at his fastest speed!  He began to catch up with The Enemy and The Enemy did not like this.  The Enemy dropped a bunch of nails onto the road so that the boy would get a flat tire!  This did not bother the boy’s car at all!  His wheels were made of wood, so a nail could not cause them to go flat!  The boy went speeding past The Enemy and took the lead in the race!

Then they got to the mountain.  The finish line was on the other side of the mountain and the road going up the mountain was very steep.  The pinewood derby car began to slow down as it went up the steep mountain.  The big engine in The Enemy’s car began to roar loudly and he began to catch up with the pinewood derby car.

When they got to the top of the mountain the two cars were racing side-by-side.  The boy smiled because he thought that his pinewood derby car would be faster going down the other side of the mountain.  He still had a good chance of winning the race!  The Enemy was not going to let this happen, he still had one mean trick to end the race for the pinewood derby car!  The Enemy ran his car into the pinewood derby car and pushed the pinewood car off the top of the mountain!

The pinewood car and the boy were falling to a certain death!  They would be smashed against the rocks at the bottom of the mountain!  The boy just smiled because he had a secret!  He pushed a button on the dashboard of the pinewood car, and two wings unfolded from the sides of the car!  Now the pinewood car was not falling anymore, it was gliding!  The best part was that the wind was blowing the pinewood car straight towards the finish line of the race!

The pinewood car gently landed right in front of the finish line and rolled across the line to easily win the race!”

Professor Ooops Lesson from the Bible:

The Professor told the kids that Believers in Jesus also have an enemy.  Our enemy is called the devil or satan.  The devil is like The Enemy in the story, he is always looking for ways to be mean and to hurt believers.

In the Bible in I Peter 5:8 says:

Stay alert!  Watch out for your great enemy, the devil.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

If you have Jesus living in your heart, you do not need to be afraid of the devil.

In the Bible in I John 4:4 it says:

But you belong to God, my dear children.  You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit (Jesus) Who lives in you is greater than the spirit (the devil) who lives in the world.

In the story the boy ended up flying to win the race, and some of us will end up flying from this earth to meet Jesus!

In the Bible in I Corinthians 15:51-55 says:

But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret.  We will not all die, but we will all be transformed!  It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown.  For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever.  And we who are living will also be transformed.  For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.  Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.  O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?”

Jesus could come back at any time and snatch the believers out of this world!  That’s right, if Jesus comes when we are still alive, we get to fly out of this world to be with him!  What a great way to win the battle against satan!

Do you have Jesus in your heart?  Are you ready?
